! We really are celebrating Valentine’s day in the bedroom, but not like that. Our bedroom previously consisted of rummage sale nightstands, my bed from college and dressers from my childhood bedroom. I got a nice shade of gray on the walls and found some curtains on clearance at Target, but the room was lacking.
That mirror got a white coat of paint and was relocated to the dining room shelf. The nightstands were complete clashing with my curtains and my new “direction”. I think we might be using them in Eleanor’s big girl room, we will have to see how that progresses. Now I want to share with you what my room looks like today. Remember, it is in progress here people!
The big addition to the room is the headboard! Ross and I had been talking about getting one for a long time. We tossed around the idea of making one, but the wood, foam, batting, fabric, and time meant that we probably would never get around to it. We had even thrown out the idea of making it our Valentine’s day gift. I mean it is for the bedroom after all.
Then I walked into TJ Maxx one day and there it was. I know what these things go for and was definitely happy about the price. We easily could have spent that much money on a fancy dinner out and gifts for Valentine’s day. So I did what any wife would do and called Ross telling him I found a headboard. I suggested AGAIN we buy it for Valentine’s day. His response, “Is it padded?”. Haha, funny guy. I then followed the phone call up with some pics and messages like, “OMG…MUST HAVE!” and “For Valentine’s day?”. Obviously, he agreed. EEK! I feel like I have a grown up room for the first time EVER!
The chair in the corner was a Craigslist find from sometime last year. I already mentioned the drapes on clearance at Target. The pillows are recycled from the living room. The bedding is a TJ Max find. The mirror is from Target thanks to birthday gift cards. The round table and bookshelf were both clearance finds from Target that we got in our very first apartment. I brought them up from the basement to make them work as our nightstands. They are mismatched, but I dig it.
Remember, this is a room in progress. The picture frame on the bookshelf isn’t actually filled yet. Ross is going to design something for that frame, but we haven’t decided what. Any ideas? I think I want it to incorporate the color of the frame on the round table. I kind of want that color to be my pop. I also would love to find a pillow with a fun pattern that ties the pop of coral/red and blues together. I did find one, but it doesn’t seem to be available anymore. And no, that frame is not filled. Add small photo frame and create art for large frame to the list. The bookshelf also isn’t “styled” yet. We have two baskets on the bottom, one for me and one for Ross. When we get around to cleaning out our nightstands, we can put some necessities in the basket.
Speaking of storage. I have a little jewelry type box on my night stand for some much needed night time essentials.
Notice the lamp on the books? That is because that nigh stand is a little big shorter then the other. The books make the lamps level to the eye.
I just read something in my latest HGTV magazine, I believe, about matching all your furniture is like wearing a purple shirt with purple pants and a purple belt, shoes, etc. So I think my accidental-I-cannot-afford-night-stands-look makes me cutting edge. Although mismatched night stands can totally work, there are a few rules that probably should be followed. They should have something in common. Mine are the same color/finish and practically the same height.
That is the current state of the bedroom. I cannot wait to share more as it progresses. The current to do list:
- Find photo for small frame
- Create art work for large frame
- Style bookshelf
- Clean out night stands
- Remove the hook from the ceiling (from when we had a hanging chandelier that swooped)
- Find a pillow that brings the blue and coral/red together.
- New, more modern lamp shades.
- Refinish dressers along with new hardware.
- Paint and trim out closet doors.
- Fill empty wall. I am thinking large leaning mirror.
This list will be completed as time and money allow. With a new baby nine weeks away, I wouldn’t hold your breath.
The room makes me so happy now, I find myself hanging out in there. I even keep it clean and make my bed (most of the time). Before, I would just shut the door and avoid it. Even though Ross and I have forgone eating out and celebrating Valentine’s day in a romantic, traditional manner, we still are celebrating. We are just celebrating family style. I will fill you in on our celebrations tomorrow. How are you celebrating Valentine’s day? Have you saved your bedroom for last? Mismatched night stands anyone?
