Printable Goodbye Letter from Elf on the Shelf

** POST UPDATE- Letter for one child and plain stationary can be found here
This will be year three of Elf on the Shelf fun at our house. Click here to see all our other Elf on the Shelf antics I have been sharing along the way. Our very first year of doing Elf on the Shelf I found myself scrambling Christmas Eve to figure out a way to end our adventure with our Elf on the Shelf, Bruce. You can see my original Goodbye to Our Elf on the Shelf post here.

I decided to write a letter giving the kids a chance to say goodbye and do what they have been dying to do all along–touch the Elf on the Shelf. I shared that letter with all of you, just as I had shared the rest of our Elf on the Shelf antics. Over time that letter has gained a lot of attention and today I wanted to offer a printable version, complete with letter head and an “official” seal of approval.

A printable goodbye letter for Elf on the Shelf. Perfect way to wrap up all the fun--even has a reminder about the reason for the season. A MUST HAVE if you do Elf on the Shelf.

For all of you families that have enjoyed the Elf on the Shelf tradition and I have been wondering how to end it, I hope this brings you the meaningful and happy ending you were looking for. If you are looking for more Elf on the Shelf ideas, be sure to check out my Elf on the Shelf Gallery.

Hi, I'm Megan--the crazy mom of three behind this blog. Please don't be intimidated by the name. Note it doesn't say BALANCED Home. We hardly have it all together, but together we have it all. Or at least that is what I tell myself. I love rearranging, decorating, creating, crafting, celebrations, family, and holidays. I share a little bit of all of that and more on Balancing Home. I am married to my college sweetheart (Is that a thing? Well now it is.) and he is a very talented designer. I use him for his skills so I can offer up sweet printables to all of you. If you want to learn more randomness about me or my blog, stop by my about page.

Hi Megan! I love this idea but when I click on the link to download the printable I get an error saying page not found. Am I doing something wrong?

    Hi Megan,

I hesitate to say anything, as some people have a difficult time with non-Christians celebrating Christmas.

However, now that this letter has proliferated it’s way through Pinterest. (Congratulations! :) )

Would you be willing to post a non-denominational version of this letter, as a printable?

Thank you! I love this letter! I have been hesitant to get an elf on the shelf,
because I felt it took away from the meaning of Christmas I want for my family.
In reading the letter, the part about Jesus birthday and love of family, I
feel, allows me to incorporate the importance of Jesus and love on Christmas
day with the crazy silliness of the elf for the month. I also really like the
part about being able to hug and kiss the elf for just a few on Christmas Eve. I
feel it helps to justify me allowing them to have fun with our elf by playing
with him for just a few minutes, even though they are not supposed to touch him.
Thank you so much for making this a printable, I really appreciate this letter
and will be using it for as long as my kids and I enjoy our elf.

I LOVE this, just one thing… I wish there were a version for an only child. This letter says “children” indicating that there are several in the family. My son would definitely pick up on that. I’ll have to create my own version.
